Abstract

|
The authour experienced a case of hemochromatosis, which is rare in this country. A sixty four years old male was admitted to our clinic with the complaints of bronze discoloration of the skin, generalized weakness, thirst, polyuria, and mild jaundice. He never tasted liquor in excess, with negative family history and blood transfusion history.
On physical examination, the liver was palpated 4 finger-breadth below the right costal margin and as relatively hard but the spleen was not palpated. Palmar erythema was also noted but no spider angioma was observed.
Liver function tests revealed functional disturbance of the hepatic parenchym by the lowered serum albumin, elevation of serum bilirubin, thymol turbidity test,¢¥bromsulphalein excretion test and alk. phosphatase and the prolonged - prothrombin time. Glucose tolerance test showed a diabetic ¢¥curve of moderate degree. Serum iron level was elevated markedly as 300¥ìg%, much more than 130 ¥ìg% of a normal person. Liver biopsy revealed many Perl¢¥s ferrocyanide-positive granules in the lobular connective tissue and the hepatic parenchymal cells. The patient was expired about¢¥ 6 months later the. discharge due to hepatic failure.
